The Amana DeepFreeze glossary comes down to a few terms. DeepFreeze System is the freezing design named on Amana’s chest freezers, such as the 16 cu ft AZC5216LW and 9 cu ft AQC0902LW. Free-O-Frost is the frost-free system on uprights like the AZF33X16DW. Fast Freeze Option chills freshly added food quickly. Energy-Saving Insulation is the cabinet insulation. And every one of these freezers uses a dial or setpoint control rather than a display, which means no error codes at all. This page explains each term and what it asks of you as an owner.
What does DeepFreeze System mean on an Amana freezer?
It is the name Amana gives to the freezing design in its chest freezers, listed on the AZC5216LW and AQC0902LW. A chest freezer opens from the top, so cold air, which is heavy, stays in the cabinet when you lift the lid. That is why chest freezers hold temperature well, cost less to run for their size and keep food longer in a power outage than most uprights. The DeepFreeze name tells you the model is built for long-term storage at deep-freeze temperature rather than the quick chilling of a refrigerator’s freezer compartment.
For a chest, upkeep is mostly about frost. Frost forms where the lid seals and where warm air gets in, and a thick layer reduces usable space. Our Amana freezer frost buildup guide explains the causes.
What is Free-O-Frost?
It is the frost-free system on the AZF33X16DW, a 16 cu ft upright. Frost-free freezers manage moisture so you do not have to defrost by hand: a defrost cycle clears frost from the cooling surface at intervals, and the system carries the resulting water away. The trade-off is that the defrost cycle slightly warms the cabinet at times, and a frost-free upright usually uses somewhat more energy than a manual-defrost model. A defrost thermostat is one of the parts that controls this, which our defrost thermostat glossary explains in detail.
Manual-defrost freezers have no such system. The older models AQU1525AEW and AFU1505BW are discontinued uprights; whether they defrost manually or automatically varies by model, so check the data label.

What does Fast Freeze Option do?
It is an extra-cold setting for freezing fresh food quickly. When you add a large amount of warm or fresh food, the freezer needs time to pull the temperature back down, and the food freezes more slowly in the meantime. Turning on Fast Freeze makes the freezer work harder so the new food reaches freezing quickly, which keeps ice crystals small and quality high. Use it a few hours before you add a big batch, such as a large purchase of meat, and switch it off afterwards, because running the freezer at its coldest all the time wastes energy. Always follow the instructions that came with your model, since the control layout varies.
Why do Amana freezers show no error codes?
Because they use a dial or setpoint thermostat instead of an electronic display. There is nothing to read out, so every problem is diagnosed from the symptom: not freezing, reverting to the warmest setting, frost buildup, not running or running constantly. That is simple for owners, since there is no code to decode, but it means that you have to describe the symptom carefully. Our guides cover the main ones: freezer not freezing and freezer not running. The parts a technician tests first are the cold-control thermostat, the defrost circuit, the gasket and the start relay, before any look at the sealed system.
How should you load a DeepFreeze chest freezer?
Because a chest freezer is deep, food at the bottom gets forgotten. Use baskets or bins to divide the space, label packages with the contents and the date, and keep the oldest food on top where you will see it. Freeze food flat in bags so it stacks and cools quickly. Leave a little space between fresh packages so cold air can circulate while they freeze. Keep the freezer at least reasonably full, since a full cabinet holds cold better than an empty one, and fill gaps with containers of frozen water if it is not. Avoid opening the lid for long periods, and check the lid seal now and then by closing it on a sheet of paper; if the paper slides out easily, the gasket needs attention.
What is Energy-Saving Insulation, and how do you protect it?
It is the insulation in the cabinet walls and lid that slows heat from entering. Its job is to keep the compressor from running more than needed. You protect it by keeping the door or lid gasket clean and sealing, not leaving the freezer open, keeping it away from heat sources and leaving a little space around it for air. A damaged gasket is the most common thing that undermines good insulation, and a freezer with a torn seal runs constantly. Our Amana freezer maintenance guide lists the routine, and the upright versus chest freezer guide helps if you are choosing between styles.
We are an independent repair company, not the manufacturer, and we will say so if an old freezer is not worth fixing. See also freezer repair or replace. If yours has stopped freezing, our Amana freezer repair service can find the cause, and you can schedule a visit online.
