TL;DR: The Amana model prefix names the appliance family, ADB for dishwashers, NTW and NFW for washers, NED and NGD for dryers, AER, AGR and ACR for ranges, AWO for wall ovens. The last letter is the finish. The serial identifies one unit, not its age.

An Amana serial number lookup starts with finding the tag, and on most of these appliances the tag is somewhere you would not think to look. The model number is the part that does the work — it tells a parts counter which of four near-identical machines you own — and on Amana it is readable once you know the prefixes. ADB is a dishwasher, NTW and NFW are washers, NED and NGD are dryers, AER, AGR and ACR are ranges, AWO is a wall oven, and the refrigerators run ABB, ASD, ART, AFI and ASI.

Where is the tag on each kind of Amana appliance?

The rating tag is a printed sticker or a foil plate, and manufacturers put it where it survives the life of the appliance rather than where it is convenient. On an Amana refrigerator, look up and to the left inside the fresh food section; on some bottom-freezer designs it sits on the ceiling near the front edge, and a flashlight helps because the print is small and the surface is white.

On a dishwasher it is on the door edge, which means you cannot see it with the door shut — open it fully and look along the side that faces the cabinet. On a washer, check under the lid on a top-loader or around the door opening on a front-loader; on a dryer, look inside the door opening and then at the rear panel. On a freestanding range, pull out the storage drawer and look at the frame behind it.

Photograph the tag when you find it. The information you want off it is three things: the full model number, the full serial number, and the type or series line if there is one.

What does an Amana serial number lookup actually give you?

Less than most people hope, and more than they expect. The serial number identifies one individual appliance out of a production run. It is what a manufacturer uses to trace a warranty claim or a service bulletin, and it is what tells a parts supplier which of several running changes your unit received when the model number alone is ambiguous.

What it does not reliably do is tell you the age of the appliance in a form you can decode at the kitchen counter. Amana serial formats have changed more than once across the decades this brand has been on the market, and a rule that works on one era gives a confidently wrong answer on another. We do not publish a decoding table for that reason. If the age matters — for a repair-or-replace decision, for example — the honest route is the purchase record, the installation date, or a technician who can read the production markings on the parts themselves.

On a dishwasher the tag is on the door edge and cannot be seen with the door closed. A photograph of it saves a second service visit.

What do the letters at the front of an Amana model number mean?

They identify the appliance family, and across the models documented on this site the pattern is consistent:

ADBDishwasher, as in ADB1400AGS or ADB1500ADS.
NTW / NFWWasher: NTW is top-load, NFW is front-load. NTW4655EW, NFW5800HW.
NED / NGDDryer: NED is electric, NGD is gas. NED5240TQ, NGD4655EW.
AER / AGR / ACRRange: AER and ACR are electric, AGR is gas. AER6603SFS, AGR6603SFW, ACR4303MFW.
AWOWall oven, as in AWO6313SFS and AWO6317SFW.
ABB / ASD / ART / AFI / ASIRefrigerator: bottom freezer, side by side, top freezer, French door.

The number that follows is the capacity or size class, which is why ADB1400 and ADB1500 sit next to each other in the same family, and why a range in the 4000s is a different platform from one in the 6000s. Freezers on this site run AZF, AQF, AUF and AFU; wine coolers are AMAW; the trash compactors are SMC and SMCD.

Why do four Amana models differ by one letter at the end?

Because the final character is the finish. Run down the model list on this site and the same base number appears several times over: ACR4303MFW, ACR4303MFB, ACR4303MFS and ACR4303MMS; ABB1924BRW, ABB1924BRB and ABB1924BRM; ART308FFDW, ART308FFDB and ART308FFDM. W is white, B is black, S is stainless, M is the metallic or monochromatic finish.

For a repair this is usually irrelevant and occasionally decisive. Sensors, pumps, valves and control boards are shared across the finishes. Doors, handles, trim, and touch panels are not, and a touch panel is exactly the part that gets ordered against the wrong suffix and arrives in the wrong color. That is why the number you give us needs to be complete down to the last character rather than the part you remember.

There is often a trailing digit after the finish letter as well — NED5240TQ0, NTW4605EW0, AGR5330BAW3. That digit is the revision, and it is the difference between two versions of the same part number. It belongs in your note.

Why does a technician ask for the serial number as well?

Because a model can run for several years with running changes inside it. Two ADB1400AGS dishwashers built two years apart can carry different pumps or a different control revision, and the serial is what separates them. When we look up a part before a visit, the model gets us to the right diagram and the serial confirms which variant of the diagram applies.

It also settles arguments about what an appliance actually is. Amana has sold electric ranges under both AER and ACR prefixes, with different cooktop technology behind the two, and the codes on the display differ by control generation rather than by badge — the split described in our guide to Amana error code families. Knowing exactly which model you have is what puts you on the right page.

What to write down before you call

  1. The complete model number, every character including the finish letter and any trailing digit.
  2. The complete serial number, copied rather than remembered.
  3. Where the tag was, so you can find it again without emptying the shelf.
  4. Anything on the display, exactly as shown.

A photograph of the tag on your phone covers the first three and takes ten seconds. It is the single most useful thing you can do before a service call on any of these appliances, and it is the reason a parts order goes out the same day instead of after a second visit.

Where model numbers matter most on this site

Filters and consumables are matched by model more strictly than any repair part, which is the first thing to check in our guide to replacing an Amana EveryDrop water filter. Buying decisions run the other way: if you are comparing what the prefixes mean before you buy, our Amana refrigerator buying guide and our dishwasher buying guide cover which families suit which kitchens.
